The Madness of Death is a lovecraftian horror/action game for PC released in 1996. It is set in the mid-1920s and follows a member of an archaeological expedition, Martin Thon, as he explores an ancient temple and confronts the forces of chaos and the Old Ones. The game’s story follows a narrative of a great evil that is unleashed upon the world, and Martin’s attempt to save it.

Gameplay is largely exploration focused, with some puzzle-solving elements. The player navigates the ancient temple and surrounding areas, collects special items, and battles various enemies with weapons and magic. There are nine levels of play, with increasing difficulty. Among them are The Swamps of Secrets, Sea of the Damned and Shadowed Mansion.

Players control Martin Thon as he journeys in a world of puzzles and battles, against foes from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, such as Nyarxaloth and Byakhee. In addition, players are able to use a selection of powerful spells and unlock special items to gain sacred wisdom.

Despite its cult following, The Madness of Death is generally an obscure game, as it did not receive much mainstream attention. Nevertheless, the game remains highly respected among retro gaming enthusiasts, as it provides a unique horror experience.
