The Last Starship is an old-school 8-bit shoot ’em up game developed by MicroProse Software. It was released for the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum in 1984 and later for the Amstrad CPC and the MSX in 1985.
The player takes the role of an ace pilot sent to space to destroy an alien mothership in order to save humanity. As the craft is damaged and cannot return to earth, the player must survive until the enemy is destroyed.
The game features eight levels, each with its own enemies and obstacles. There are laser cannons, force fields, meteor storms, and many other dangers that the player must overcome in order to succeed. The game combines classic side-scrolling space shooter gameplay with basic tactical elements, such as plotting optimum routes through levels and avoiding hazards.
The game also includes an additional mini-game, called the War Room, where the player must make strategic decisions to ensure the success of their mission. This mini-game requires the player to manage the resources of the last starship and allocate power to weapons, shields and engines, in a turn-based strategy game. The Last Starship is considered one of the earliest examples of a combined shooter and strategy hybrid game.
