The Bastonnes game is a two-player abstract strategy game originating from France. The game features an 8×8 board that can be played on any flat surface with no puzzles or distractions. The game is based on “baste”, a French word which means to bang or to strike.

The game is simple for anyone to understand and play. There are 16 pieces in the form of black and white discs placed in the center of the board: 8 white pieces and 8 black pieces. Players alternate turns sliding one of their pieces either forwards, sideways, or backwards one spot each turn. The objective of the game is to line up five of your pieces in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). There are no blocks or obstacles in the game to obstruct you, so forcing your opponent to play defensive is the key to winning.
