Players move their craft around a two-dimensional grid, using weapons to defeat alien foes in a race to build starbases. A strategic element of the game is that players must find the quickest route possible to gain the most points for each level, in order to move on. Gameplay consists of strategic decision making and tactical combat in interplanetary and space environments. Players have control of the speed, direction and weapons of their ship, which can be upgraded to specific classes of ship along the way. Players can decide to engage in furious battle with the enemies or just sneak through some of the levels completely untouched.
